Acupuncture for Tennis elbow
Acupuncture has shown that it can be a very effective tool for treating tennis elbow as well as golfer’s elbow.
Golfer’s elbow is called medial epicondylitis and is a painful inflammatory condition that affects golfers and those who overuse the muscles and tendons in the forearm through repetitive activity. This pain is located on the inside of the elbow and allows for tiny tears in the tendons which have a tendency for injury.
Tennis elbow is similar in that it is inflammation of the elbow, but the origin of the damage is on the outside, or lateral side of the elbow.
The symptoms of tennis elbow can include:
Difficulty holding onto objects
Difficulty gripping objects
Pain and stiffness
Weakness of wrist and elbow
Forearm tightness
Tenderness on the medial side of the elbow
what happens during the treatment for tennis or golfer’s elbow?
Treatment works by first massage to the area which increases the circulation and flow of blood to the tissues. Then fine sterile needles are inserted at several locations in the area both local to the pain and further away at the end of the affected channel. The natural flow of energy that is blocked in tennis or golfer's elbow becomes blocked and the needles improve the circulation, reduce inflammation and pain and take spasm out of the surrounding muscles and speed up healing.
With a well-trained acupuncturist this treatment should be relatively painless and although results vary, one should see good results in 3-4 sessions. In acute circumstances, treatment twice a week can be considered for 2 weeks.
Also recommended for this condition is rest!
Often people try and use the elbow to encourage healing but rest for 2 weeks is usually helpful. Using tiger balm can also support the muscles in the area in the post care period as well as turmeric and a nutrient rich diet to support healing in the body.
“‘I came to see Kate as someone at the tennis club recommended her. I was petrified of needles and during the first session we just used ‘acupressure’ where she used her fingers to stimulate the points instead of needling. I felt better after one session and was brave enough to have 4 needles the next time! Along with some rest, that sorted my issue. I recommend it as I was taking so many pain killers and getting nowhere. Thank you Kate.’”
