Acupuncture for Migraines and headaches

is acupuncture effective for migraines and headaches?

Several studies have pointed to the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of migraine, both in reducing the frequency and severity of attacks. Most experience a significant improvement in their symptoms after a course of acupuncture which is a welcome relief to this debilitating condition.

Headache and migraine come to the fore when the body is out of balance in some way. One of the most difficult stubborn migraine presentations is the hormonal type, that causes symptoms with regularity at certain times in the menstrual cycle.

However, there are other imbalances that can come up such as dietary intolerances, tiredness, tension and stress, emotional deregulation, dehydration and irregular blood sugar. All of these potential factors are discussed at an acupuncture treatment as identifying the triggers can be really helpful to gaining a long term solution to the issue.

what happens during the treatment for migraines and headaches?

At the treatment itself a full case history will be taken so as to understand the full picture, no two situations are the same and it is a very individual approach. Time of day, severity and individual symptoms will all be discussed as well as other health issues such as sleep, digestion, energy, mood and general health.

As each diagnosis is based on the individual, the points selected will vary from person to person and from week to week as the treatment progresses. You may be given a treatment on your back if your headaches are more commonly associated with your periods or over-exertion and exhaustion, while in another case where mental and emotional stress is more of a factor points on the hands and feet maybe used.

You will be given lifestyle guidance to support the treatment. This could be dietary, in the form of restricting red wine, cheese, coffee, chocolate or orange juice, or lifestyle related by taking a look at managing stress, which will significantly facilitate recovery. Treatment is an active collaboration between both parties and is an empowering supportive experience.

I came to see Kate as I was recommended by a friend. I had been resisting it for the 20 years that I had been suffering with migraine but when I plucked up courage to chat to Kate she reassured me about the needles before I came. We started off using acupressure and by week 3 I was brave enough to actually have a full treatment! I was stunned by the improvement – my migraines went from 2 or 3 a month to once every 2 months and now I hardly get them at all. I thoroughly recommend trying it, it has given me my life back and I found out ways of managing my stress levels that have been so helpful. Thank you Kate.
