Acupuncture for long covid

does Acupuncture help with long covid?

Yes, it can do! One of the issues we are facing in our post-pandemic world is the prevalence of long-Covid among young and old. The condition is a kind of post-viral syndrome and refers to a range of symptoms that can last weeks or months after being affected with the initial virus.

The symptoms can depend on the sufferer and the state of the immune system but commonly include:

  • Extreme fatigue

  • Shortness of breath

  • Heart palpitations, chest pain or tightness

  • Problems with memory and concentration or ‘brain fog’

  • Changes to taste and smell

  • Joint pain

  • Headaches, weakness and upset stomach

There is a low level of support for these wide ranging symptoms with Western medicine as resources are stretched and symptoms vary wildly. True healing can be a very slow process and this can be frustrating for many.

With acupuncture we can take a look at which resources are deficient and nourish them accordingly. Treatment is then targeted at working with the overtaxed resources to regain balance. A lot of work is with the immunity and often dietary and lifestyle changes are suggested to enhance the process.

How often should you get acupuncture for long covid?

Generally speaking it is good to see patients weekly for 6 sessions and then have a review. Most have had a marked improvement after this time and not had to deal with the side effects of medication on an already over-stretched body.

As well as working on the immune system, acupuncture is adept at calming the nervous system which is often elevated at this time as dealing with chronic ill-health takes its toll.

In Kate’s Clinic, dietary therapy plays a big role and aside from rest, Kate recommends immune supporting foods such as soup, particularly onion soup and mushroom soup!

I had to take a year off work with long-Covid and had sessions of acupuncture to support my recovery, luckily paid for by my health insurance. Kate really listened and supported my issues and I love the sessions with her. I have started feeling more energetic and really understand how to look after my recovery better. I would recommend her highly!
