Acupuncture for insomnia
In today's busy world insomnia is on the increase and we are seeing it not only in the older generation, but also in the young and acupuncture is one of the tools that is helpful to support this condition.
Insomnia is characterised by finding it hard to fall asleep, waking several times during the night and/or waking early. Common causes include stress, anxiety, and lifestyle factors like caffeine and alcohol intake. Many women also report that it is exacerbated around the time of the per-menopause and the menopause.
Poor sleep patterns can become established and develop into a set pattern for many years and chronic sleep deprivation is know to be unhelpful for health. Most people try all kinds of over-the-counter remedies and prescription medication before acupuncture, with varying results.
Acupuncture is known for its ability to quieten the nervous system and move the body from 'fight or flight' (sympathetic) to 'rest and digest' (parasympathetic). This is why people often feel very relaxed after the session. It is almost always a painless experience and very relaxing as it often is accompanied by gentle breathwork techniques to support the acupuncture while the needles are in.
what happens during the treatment for insomnia?
In Kate's acupuncture clinics in St Albans and in Harpenden, she will recommend 4 weekly or fortnightly sessions to support sleep and then a review to see how things are progressing. After a full health history discussion, the session will be around 25 minutes and you will relax with a few needles to support the nervous system and re-balance any other symptoms that need support. There is generally an improvement after 4 sessions.
As this treatment is holistic, it will look at all systems in the body. It is also collaborative, and Kate will very often recommend encouraging a new pattern to encourage a sleep drive. A combination of lifestyle changes and acupuncture usually heralds promising results.
“I came to have acupuncture as a last resort desperate measure after my second baby when I simply could not sleep. At that point, I would have tried anything. Kate explained how sleep works and together we made small changes to my daytime routine which supported me at night. I also became less paranoid about sleep, which helped! I still see Kate for general health and never have sleep issues!”
