Acupuncture to bring on labour

does acupuncture work to bring on labour?

Acupuncture historically has been known primarily to support painful conditions but it has really beneficial effects in pregnancy and with bringing on labour.

During pregnancy women are often hesitant to resort to using pharmaceuticals to support any unwanted side effects of being pregnant as they are mindful of harming the baby. Increasingly though acupuncturists are using this ancient technique to bring on labour and to help support a natural spontaneous onset of childbirth. Many are cautious about being taken into hospital for a chemical induction and have been trying this ancient technique to help.

Acupuncture uses fine needles along the energy or 'meridian' lines to affect the energy in the body. One of the main benefits of acupuncture is that it is highly effective at calming the nervous system. Often women feel anxious towards the end of their pregnancies and this treatment works wonders to quieten the mind and the body, wonderful preparation for labour. When the body is calm, the onset of labour is spontaneous.

what happens during labour inducing treatment sessions?

When you come for a treatment to encourage labour, we will also look at any potential elements that are hindering the onset. Sometimes women feel deeply fearful of entering unknown territory, some feel exhausted and sleep deprived and have not got the energy to birth, and some have logistical complications that are getting in the way. After a discussion of these variables, acupuncture works to ease these symptoms making way for birth.

During the session and after a full consultation and health history, the acupuncture points that are chosen are ones that have a 'downward' energy in the body and work to soften the cervix and to relax the mind and body. Whilst relaxing with the needles, breathwork techniques are demonstrated and practiced that have the effect of further calming the body.

Acupressure for encouraging labour

If the patient is fearful of needles, we simply use acupressure to perform the same treatment. This is using the fingers to exert pressure on the points but doesn't involve needles and is almost as effective as acupuncture. During the session too, Kate will demonstrate points that the labouring woman can use to ease pain. She will also show some points that partners can use to support the process and ease back pain between contractions. Partners are welcome to attend the sessions at the clinic.

When to do acupuncture to bring on labour

If time allows prior to labour, Kate offers 'Pre-birth acupuncture' which is offered at weeks 37, 38 and 39. These sessions gently prepare the body for labour and talk through any last minute concerns. In her experience, taking up these sessions often eliminates the need for the session that is designed for acupuncture to bring up labour in the post 40 week period.

The sessions are calming, nourishing and effective at encouraging the body's natural rhythms, with no side effects. Call Kate to discuss further.

I have visited Kate throughout my previous pregnancies and post pregnancy which has been transformational. Kate provides a wonderful warm and safe space which I always look forward to visiting. Her healing and guiding hands and soothing encouraging words have helped me enormously and I wouldn’t hesitate in encouraging others to book an appointment. Thank you Kate
